Gears, motors and machines given second lives
Machine Repair & Refurbishment
Re-Ropes repairs and refurbishes the machines the ropes run on: gearbox overhaul and repair, motor renewals, new gear installations and overspeed governor units — keeping serviceable traction machines in service instead of forcing premature modernisation.
Overview
Not every ageing machine room needs a modernisation contract. Worm gears can be re-metalled and re-shimmed, bearings and seals renewed, motors rewound or replaced, and governors serviced — often for a fraction of replacement, and often with better lead times.
In detail
Our machine work grew out of roping: we were already in the machine room, already measuring wear, already trusted with the drive train. Today gearboxes, motors and governor units are core services, delivered with the same survey-first discipline as everything else we do.

Why it matters
01
Refurbishment beats replacement — when it’s honest
A measured assessment tells you whether a machine has another decade in it. Where it does, overhaul delivers it at a fraction of modernisation cost; where it doesn’t, we say so.
02
The drive train is a system
Ropes, sheave, gearbox, motor and brake wear together. Fixing one while ignoring the others buys symptoms, not solutions — our surveys look at the whole train.
03
Downtime is the real currency
Exchange units, planned works and machine-room discipline keep buildings running while the heavy work happens.
Common questions
Asked before every engagement.
Something more specific? A specialist will answer it directly.
Ask usCan old gearboxes really be economically repaired?
Frequently, yes. Classic worm-gear machines were built to be maintained: worm wheels can be re-rimmed, thrusts and bearings renewed, and backlash reset. The survey establishes wear against economic limits before any commitment.
Do you work on brakes?
Yes — machine brake refurbishment is a dedicated service: linings, pivots, springs and adjustment restored and proven. Brakes are safety components; the work is documented accordingly.
Motors: rewind or replace?
We assess both routes — condition, efficiency, availability and cost. Where replacement wins, we supply and commission the new motor; where a rewind is sound, we manage it.
