Because new ropes deserve true grooves

Sheave & Diverter Renewal and Regrooving

Sheave and diverter services restore the other half of the traction system: grooves. Re-Ropes assesses groove wear, regrooves sheaves and diverters back to true profile, and supplies replacement sheaves — because fitting new ropes into worn grooves shortens their life from day one.

Overview

Traction is a partnership between rope and groove. As grooves wear — unevenly, out of round, or bell-mouthed at the undercut — they load ropes unequally, chew through fresh wire and degrade the very friction the lift depends on. Rope symptoms are often groove problems wearing a disguise.

In detail

Our engineers measure groove profiles as part of every re-roping survey. Where wear is within limits, we say so. Where it is not, sheaves and diverters are regrooved to the correct profile or replaced — so the new ropes seat evenly, share load equally and deliver their full service life.

Why it matters

01

Grooves decide rope life

A worn groove concentrates pressure on fewer wires and mismatched diameters share load unequally. New ropes in bad grooves can lose a large fraction of their life before the paint dries.

02

Traction is friction, engineered

Groove profile sets the grip between rope and sheave. Wear changes that geometry — and with it, the traction margins the installation was designed to hold.

03

One inspection, whole system

Because we survey ropes and grooves together, you never buy rope life the sheaves will immediately take back.

Common questions

Asked before every engagement.

Something more specific? A specialist will answer it directly.

Ask us
How do I know if my sheave needs regrooving?

Signs include ropes riding at different heights in their grooves, polished or bell-mouthed groove flanks, rapid wear on recently fitted ropes, and unequal tensions that keep returning after equalisation. Groove gauging during a survey settles it with measurements.

Regroove or replace — how do you decide?

By remaining material and geometry: grooves can be machined while enough rim remains to restore full profile and undercut at a safe diameter. Beyond that, replacement is the honest recommendation — and we supply the sheave.

Should sheaves be regrooved when ropes are replaced?

They should always be assessed. Fitting new ropes into part-worn, uneven grooves is the classic false economy in roping — where the survey shows meaningful wear, machining at the same visit protects the new set from day one.
