Rope Lubrication — Feeding the Core

The cheapest life-extension in the lift industry.

Lubrication is a lift rope’s life-support: it suppresses the internal wire-on-wire fretting that consumes ropes from the inside, keeps the fibre core from drying out, and holds corrosion at bay. The craft is balance — enough of the right dressing to feed the rope, never so much that the sheave loses its grip.

    Fibre hearts ship saturated with dressing — the rope’s internal supply line.

    Flexing pumps lubricant through the strands to the sliding surfaces that need it.

    Heat and cycles deplete the reservoir; dryness shows as rouging and accelerating wear.

  4. 4Re-lubricate thinly

    Compatible penetrating dressing, applied sparingly and worked in — feeding the inside, not coating the outside.

    Grip is the drive: excess or wrong product on the crowns costs friction the sheave cannot spare.

How it works, plainly

Every bend cycle slides wires microscopic distances against each other. Lubricant is what stands between that sliding and steel loss: manufacturers build ropes around a lubricated fibre core that acts as a reservoir, wicking dressing outward through the strands as the rope works.

Service depletes the reservoir. Heat, pressure and time dry the core; a dry rope announces itself with rouging, faster diameter loss and internal corrosion that no external wipe can reach. Field re-lubrication with a compatible, penetrating dressing replenishes the system — applied thinly and worked in, not painted on.

Traction adds the constraint other rope applications don’t have: friction is the drive. Over-lubrication — or the wrong, greasy product — cuts the coefficient of friction in the groove and with it the traction margin, risking slip. The rule is compatible product, thin application, and grip checked after: lubrication serves the rope without robbing the sheave.

Should lift ropes be lubricated in service?

Usually yes, when assessment shows dryness and the rope is otherwise serviceable — with a compatible penetrating dressing applied sparingly. The exception is ropes already at or near discard: lubricant is life-extension, not resurrection.

Can lubrication cause rope slip?

Over-application or greasy, non-penetrating products can — traction depends on groove friction. Correct practice uses minimal quantities of the right dressing and verifies grip afterwards.

How often should ropes be re-lubricated?

By condition, not calendar: environment, duty and construction set the drying rate. Surveys that record lubrication state build the trend that answers the question for each installation.
