Rope Wear & Discard — Reading the Wires
Ropes announce their retirement — if someone is looking.
Wire ropes are designed to be replaced: wear is normal, and discard criteria define the point where enough evidence has accumulated — broken wires within a reference length, diameter reduction against nominal, corrosion, rouging or deformation — that the rope’s margin is spent. Reading those signs early converts an emergency into a planned re-rope.

How it works, plainly
Ropes die from the outside and the inside at once. Externally, groove pressure flattens and abrades the crown wires until fatigue cracks them — visible as broken wires, the classic countable evidence. The pattern matters as much as the count: breaks clustered in one strand or at one position signal a localised problem; breaks distributed along the length signal honest old age.
Internally, wires fret against each other at every bend cycle. Fine red-brown dust — rouging — bleeding from the valleys is the debris of that hidden wear, and a compacting core lets the whole rope shrink: measured diameter loss against nominal is one of the most telling single indicators, because it integrates everything happening inside.
Corrosion accelerates both, and dryness accelerates corrosion. Discard practice therefore reads the whole rope — break counts within reference lengths per the applicable criteria, diameter, lubrication state, deformation, termination condition — and treats the worst finding as governing. For lifts, criteria come from the examination regime and manufacturer guidance; the discipline is measurement, not impressions.

How many broken wires condemn a lift rope?
It depends on construction and the criteria in force: thresholds are set as breaks within a reference length (and per strand), with clustered breaks and valley breaks weighted more severely. That is precisely why counts are taken formally — the number that matters is the criterion, not folklore.
What is the red dust on my ropes?
Rouging — fine oxidised debris from internal fretting between wires, often the first visible sign that the inside of the rope is wearing and drying. It is a prompt for measurement and lubrication assessment, and frequently an early herald of diameter loss.
Can a rope pass on breaks but still need replacement?
Yes — excessive diameter reduction, corrosion, dryness, deformation (kinks, birdcaging) or termination distress each independently justify discard. Break counting is one instrument in the panel, not the whole dashboard.
