Rope Tension Equalisation
Five ropes, one load — only if they agree.
A multi-rope suspension only works as designed when every rope carries its share. Unequal tensions overload some ropes and grooves while idling others — accelerating wear on both and distorting traction. Equalisation measures each rope’s tension and adjusts at the terminations until the set genuinely shares the load.

How it works, plainly
Suspension sets are statically indeterminate: nothing about hanging five ropes between two points forces them to share equally. Tiny differences — in length, stretch, groove depth, spring stiffness — decide the split, and service amplifies whatever imbalance exists: the tightest rope wears fastest, its groove wears deepest, and the geometry drifts further from equal.
The classic symptoms read like a rope problem: one rope breaking wires early, one groove polishing bright, ride vibration at rope passing frequency. The cause is arithmetic — a rope carrying well above its share is living a harder life than its certificate assumed.
Equalisation is measurement plus adjustment. Individual tensions are compared (by deflection feel raised to instrument-grade with tension meters), then adjusted at the shackle rods and springs, with the springs themselves assessed — tired springs cannot hold a balance. On new sets, equalisation pairs with stretch management: balance at fit, re-balance after bedding-in.

How unequal is too unequal?
Good practice keeps every rope within a small percentage band of the set average — spreads beyond that band measurably accelerate wear. The exact number matters less than the discipline: measure, adjust, re-check after settling.
Why does imbalance keep returning after adjustment?
Usually the grooves: unequal groove diameters force ropes to travel at different speeds and re-create tension differences continuously. Equalisation holds only when the geometry underneath is true — which is why we gauge grooves whenever balance is a repeat offender.
Do suspension springs really matter?
Critically — they are what lets the set breathe and share dynamically. Collapsed or mismatched springs pin ropes at whatever tension they happen to have; renewing springs at re-rope is standard Re-Ropes practice.
