Terminations — Where the Load Leaves the Rope
One hundred percent of the load, through the last hundred millimetres.
A termination transfers the entire suspended load from the rope into the structure — through the last few centimetres of an assembly at each end. Wedge sockets grip by geometry and self-tighten under load; pressed terminals swage a sleeve permanently onto the rope; threaded terminals add adjustability; springs above them let the set share load. The hitch is small, and absolutely everything passes through it.

How it works, plainly
The wedge socket is the field workhorse because its physics work for you: the rope wraps a wedge inside a tapered housing, and load pulls the wedge deeper, squeezing the rope harder — grip that scales with demand. Correct make-up matters (live side straight in line, tail secured, seating pull applied), but done right it approaches the rope’s strength and can be re-made for shortening in minutes.
Pressed (swaged) terminals trade field flexibility for works consistency: a steel sleeve is hydraulically pressed onto the rope to a controlled after-diameter, producing a compact, repeatable termination made under workshop conditions. Threaded terminals extend the idea with adjustment — suspension set-up by the turn of a nut.
Above every termination sits the spring stack: compression springs and plates that give each rope a compliant path into the hitch plate. They are what equalisation adjusts against and what lets five stiff steel ropes behave like a sharing set. Terminations plus springs are a system — renewed and set up together, they hold the balance the fit established.

Why do broken wires cluster at terminations?
Because bending stops there: the rope flexes in service right up to a rigid grip, concentrating fatigue at the socket mouth. It is the first place a survey looks and a routine reason sets are condemned even with healthy mid-lengths.
Are wedge sockets as strong as pressed terminals?
Correctly made, both achieve high termination efficiency and both are industry-standard. Wedge sockets win on field serviceability (shortening, re-make); pressed terminals win on compact consistency. Application and design intent decide.
Should terminations be renewed with the ropes?
Assemblies, springs and wear parts — yes, as standard. Housings in sound condition can serve again where inspection supports it; springs almost never should. New ropes deserve a hitch that shares like new.
