The Overspeed Governor Loop
The rope whose job is the worst day.
The governor rope is a continuous loop connecting the car to the overspeed governor at the top of the shaft and a tension weight at the bottom. It does no lifting — it rides along with the car so that, if the car ever overspeeds, the governor grips the rope and the rope pulls the safety gear on, wedging the car to its guides. It is the one rope bought purely for the worst day.

How it works, plainly
In normal service the loop simply circulates: car moves, rope moves, governor sheave spins at car speed. The governor is a speed sensor with teeth — centrifugal mechanisms watch the sheave speed, and only if it exceeds the tripping threshold does anything change.
On overspeed, the governor grips its rope — jaw or traction grip per design. The still-moving car now pulls against a held rope, and that relative pull is exactly what operates the linkage to the safety gear: wedges or rollers jam against the guide rails and arrest the car mechanically, electricity not required. The tension weight at the loop’s bottom exists to keep the rope taut enough to transmit that pull faithfully.
Because the loop must run for years and then perform once, perfectly, governor ropes live by their own rules: constructions chosen for grip and dimensional stability, condition standards that tolerate less than suspension duty, and function trips as part of testing. A governor rope that is worn, slack or contaminated is a safety circuit with a corroded contact.

Why can’t the governor rope be lubricated like suspension ropes?
Because the governor must grip it decisively on demand. Dressings that would be routine on suspension duty can let the rope slide in the governor’s grip — so governor ropes use sparing, specified practice that preserves both steel and grip.
Does the governor rope carry the car if suspension fails?
No — it never carries the car’s weight. It carries a signal: the pull that sets the safety gear. The safeties and guides then take the load mechanically.
When is a governor rope replaced?
On condition — wear, broken wires, corrosion, stretch beyond the tension weight’s accommodation — and routinely alongside major roping works, so the whole circuit starts fresh together.
